Paris Orly Airport (ORY) was once the City of Light’s principal air hub, before passing the baguette to the expansive Charles De Gaulle (CDG) Airport in 1974.

While ORY had about a million fewer passengers than CDG in 2023, it’s certainly no slouch, offering visitors an excellent facility that’s often cited as having the higher number of domestic flights overall. This is partly due to it being home to Transavia Airlines, a popular budget carrier owned by Air France which flies to over 100 destinations from Orly Airport. You’ll also find La Compagnie, a French business-class-only airline that places the emphasis on style and luxury for (literally) high-flying clientele.

Orly Airport History

Opened in 1932 in the suburbs south of Paris, the airport was originally known as Villeneuve Orly due to its proximity to the commune of the same name. As well as providing smooth access to the capital, its location was well-situated for reaching other important French locales such as Versailles, Choisy-le-Roi and, yes, Disneyland Paris. 

Less than a decade after its establishment, the airport transitioned to military use during World War II. Villeneuve Orly was repurposed as a combat airfield, serving various operational needs. Subsequently, it experienced extensive bombing, which resulted in substantial damage to its infrastructure and flight capabilities.

After the war, Orly was rebuilt and reimagined, swiftly establishing itself as one of the world’s busiest airports. Its fortunes were entirely turned around by the early ‘60s, when the opening of its new terminal in 1961 saw it declared the world’s most modern center for air travel. Pioneering new runway and terminal designs, plus the arrival of more affordable airlines, led the charge for a future-facing airport and a new symbol of optimism. 

Orly’s centrality to air travel’s development would continue until 1974, when Charles De Gaulle took over as Paris’s premier hub. But even now, ORY remains a vital part of French air infrastructure, with over 32 million passengers in 2023 – up by 10% on 2022’s figures. Orly’s most recent terminal opening in 2019 has been instrumental in its continued growth.

How to Get to Paris Orly Airport

Leaving your car behind in favor of public and private transport options? Orly has you covered, with links to the heart of Paris in just 25 minutes.

  • Metro line 14: The extension of Metro line 14 has provided a simple, direct route between central Paris and ORY. You’ll get there in just 25 minutes, with a variety of stops along the way making it easy to arrive precisely where you want to. A full-fare e-ticket costs €10.30 and can be loaded onto an Easy Pass for an extra €2 or onto your smartphone. Please be aware that Metro 14 is scheduled to be closed after 10 p.m. and on some Sundays between now and the end of 2024 due to planned modernization work.
  • OrlyVal and RER B: Hop on the OrlyVal, the airport’s automated metro that travels between terminals, and disembark at Antony station. From here, you can catch the RER B line directly into Paris. The journey takes between 25 and 45 minutes. A full-fare ticket costs €14.50. The OrlyVal runs regularly between 6 a.m. and 11:35 p.m.
  • OrlyBus: The OrlyBus represents one of the more affordable options for a fast transfer to Paris, taking just 30 minutes and costing €11.20. Simply hop on at one of the bus stations at airport terminals 1, 2, 3, or 4 every 10 to 15 minutes. The OrlyBus stops at Place Denfert-Rochereau, where it connects with the RER B train and various Paris Metro lines. The service runs daily from 5:35 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.
  • Tramway T7: Not only can you traverse Paris via train, metro, and bus, but a tramway line will also shuttle you close to the capital from the airport. The Tramway T7 line connects the airport to Villejuif-Louis Aragon station, where you can transfer to Metro line 7 to continue your journey to the heart of Paris. The trip takes just over 30 minutes and costs €2.50—outstanding value.

Paris Orly Airport Terminal Overview

Paris Orly is made up of four terminals, all of which are interconnected. This makes getting between them easy, whether you’re traveling on foot or by shuttle. Just follow the ample signage to move towards the terminal and gate area you need.

Transportation Between Terminals

The good news is Orly’s compact design makes it easy to traverse between terminals by foot. Depending on your speed, it’s estimated at around five minutes’ walk per terminal. 

Due to Terminal 4’s location being slightly farther apart from the others, however, you may want to hop on one of ORY’s free shuttles to move smoothly between them.

The free OrlyVal automated metro is the go-to for a speedy transfer, whisking you to your terminal of choice in a matter of minutes. It also stops at the Antony RER station, from which you can get transport directly into Paris itself.

The OrlyVal runs every four minutes at peak times and every 7 to 12 minutes at other times, from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. every day.

Alternatively, you can also hop on the OrlyBus to get from Terminal 4 across to Terminal 1, 2 or 3.

Lounges at Paris Orly Airport

Orly’s strong focus on domestic flights means its lounge game is unpretentious and straightforward, with a small selection available for travelers who like to be treated like a VIP.

Premium Traveller Lounge (Terminal 1)

With chic, modern decor and plush furnishing, the Premium Traveller Lounge in Terminal 1 will add a stylish je nai se quois to your airport experience.

Located on the ground floor after security, this lounge offers a range of refreshments including a coffee machine, alcohol options such as beers in the fridge, and a snack and sandwich buffet. A small range of hot options such as soups may also be available.

Other features include convenient flight screens, TVs, air con, and newspapers and magazines to choose from. The Premium Traveller Lounge is accessible for people with disabilities and is a no smoking zone. A variety of seating options means you can relax before you fly, or use one of the high platform desks to get some work done while you’re in transit.

Access is for Priority Pass and DragonPass members, or oneworld members with Sapphire and Emerald status flying with Iberia. SkyTeam Elite Plus Frequent Flyers traveling with Air Europa are also welcome, as are select American Express, Capital One and Mastercard cardholders. A day pass can also be purchased for €47.

Air France Lounge (Terminal 2 and 3)

France’s national carrier is represented in Terminal 2 and 3 at Orly, offering visitors a little luxury before they take to the skies.

Terminal 2’s lounge spans 3,600 square feet, offering 112 seats to short-haul passengers who qualify. A selection of sustainably sourced food and drink made from French ingredients includes snacks, pastries, sandwiches and salads, as well as a delightful glass of complimentary wine.

Terminal 3’s Air France Lounge only opened in 2020, representing ORY’s first true business class lounge. Smaller than the Terminal 2 offering, it nevertheless manages to incorporate high quality materials and luxurious design features into its decor. A champagne bar sets the tone, while a second bar nearby places the focus on wine, with some on offer from world famous sommelier Paolo Basso. 

Alongside the heavenly beverages you’ll find an excellent and diverse food menu, including cuisine with a Breton twist by chef Jerome Banctel.

As you’d hope, both lounges feature a full range of amenities to help you relax in style, including flight screens, TVs, free Wi-Fi and dedicated staff. Access depends on SkyTeam membership. However, passengers flying in business class on Air France or other SkyTeam airlines can also access the lounge. 

Royal Air Maroc Salon Zenith (Terminal 4)

For OneWorld flyers, the warm and welcoming Royal Air Maroc Salon Zenith awaits in Terminal 4. This certified 3-star lounge only opened in 2022, covering 300 square meters and celebrating Morocco and its vibrant culture.

Visitors can sample a hot buffet counter with a range of delicious options, before enjoying their food on the spacious outdoor terrace complete with panoramic view of the runways below. Areas dedicated to prayer and business also make up key elements of this lounge. 

Access to the Royal Air Maroc Salon Zenith is available to OneWorld premium passengers, select loyalty members, and eligible travelers on Royal Air Maroc flights.

PrimeClass Lounge (Terminal 4)

Orly’s PrimeClass Lounge offers a modern and inviting atmosphere, featuring a terrace with an excellent view of the tarmac. Inside, travelers can relax on a range of stylish sofas, armchairs, and coffee tables. With numerous electrical outlets and dedicated business areas, the lounge is ideal for those needing to work while in transit. A self-service buffet includes mini sandwiches, hot options, sweet treats, and a selection of soft and alcoholic drinks to enjoy.

Orly’s PrimeClass Lounge is independent, meaning passengers can access it regardless of their carrier.  Access is available in several ways: a day pass starting at €42 for a three-hour stay, through memberships like DragonPass and TAV Passport, or with complimentary entry for eligible passengers on certain airlines, including Air Algérie, Air Caraïbes, Corsair, Royal Air Maroc, and Tunisair.
